Heathrow
Heathrow is the central hub of international air travel as
it is the busiest international airport in the world. It
sees over 55 million passengers on more than 420,000 flights
a year pass through its walls, and has over 95 airlines flying
to more than 185 destinations worldwide. It also has the
world’s second busiest cargo port. It is located 15
miles west of central London. It has four terminals and two
main runways. Over 90 airlines are based at Heathrow that
all provide flights to international and domestic destinations.
Currently there are four main terminals but there are plans
for building a fifth one to release some of the burden on
Terminal 1. The major airlines running through Heathrow are
British Airways, Virgin, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, United
Airlines, Lufthansa, Iberia, Alitalia and Air France.
Food
Heathrow International Airport has many restaurants and
shops to offer, found within the four terminals. Boasting all
the
hungry traveller may require, there is something available
to please everyone. Some of the restaurants to be found are:
Pizza Hut, Garfunkels, Harry Ramsden's, Burger King Express
and Costa Coffee. Heathrow has all the conveniences of a major
airport. There is no problem finding places to shop, especially
in Terminal 4. Currency exchange and bank services at Heathrow
have a 50 currency guarantee. And on top of that, if the currency
you require is not available, you can receive a bonus payment
for your trouble. The modern business centre consists of conference
or boardrooms, individual workstations and lounges that all
have catering, showers, telephones, fax, computer facilities,
photocopying and mobile phone hire.
The Terminals
Terminal 1 serves domestic flights, almost all
UK airline departures to Europe as well as South African Airways
flights.
Terminal 2 functions for most non-UK carriers' flights to Europe
as well as some long haul destinations. Terminal 3 is the terminal
for long haul to the US, South American, Asian and Asia Pacific
airlines as well as most African carriers. Terminal 4 caters
to British Airways long haul and British Airways flights to
Amsterdam, Athens, Paris, Moscow and Tel Aviv. KLM and Qantas
also use Terminal 4.
